Any family looking to build up their library needs to include some of the classic holiday stories. Not only are these the cream of the crop when it comes to setting the standard for modern holiday classics, but also a great way for the family to spend time together.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
The quintessential Christmas story was written by Charles Dickens and first published in 1843. It has gone on to become one of the most enduring holiday novels worldwide. Vivid characters like Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Ebeneezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley and the three Christmas Ghosts (Past, Present and Future) all combine to show the reader not only the importance of Christmas, but also the importance of living a charitable life.
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry
A short but powerful Christmas story written by O. Henry and first published in 1906, this is a tale of love and selflessness. The story centers around two newlyweds, Jim and Della who are very much in love and also very poor. They decide to go to extreme measures, sacrificing their own cherished possessions in order to give something to their beloved. In an ironic twist of fate, both gifts are ultimately useless, though they both learn that their love is greater than any possession.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
The popular rhymed Christmas story was first published in 1957 and captured a place in the hearts of children and adults alike. Dr. Suess's tale centers around the bitter Grinch and his hatred of the Whos, especially their elaborate Christmas celebrations. In an effort to take away the Who's holiday joy, the Grinch devises a plan to steal Christmas. He takes all their decorations, food and presents in an attempt to "keep Christmas from coming". However, to the Grinch's surprise, the Who's are still celebrating without a single gift, decoration or morsel of food, and they are as joyful as ever. In this, the Grinch learns that the true meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with things and everything to do with love, family and friendship.
'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore
One of the most famous holiday poems, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (or sometimes known as A Visit from St. Nicholas) was originally published in 1823. It has been recognized as a pivotal point in popular culture, bringing the idea of Santa Claus and his reindeer to mainstream audiences. The poem has been parodied and adapted numerous times following its initial publication, and remains as a favorite among parents and children alike.
These books are all must-haves in any family library collection and can be treasured for years to come.
